Brewster Wheeler Recreation Center could be taken off Detroit demo list

Posted: Updated:
Mayor Mike Duggan made a big announcement about the future of the Brewster Wheeler Recreation Center Thursday. The historic building in Detroit had been target for demolition, but now it appears that won't happen.

The latest turn of events is great news to the people in this community who have been circulating a petition to save the building. Its been a staple here, a part of the landscape for more than eight decades and they want to keep it that way.

Former employee Charlie Beckham had the unfortunate job of closing down the Brewster Wheeler Recreation Center in 2006. For the past 8 years it has sat vacant. But now, Duggan announced he's hopeful a developer will give the dilapidated building new life because it deserves it.

The building first opened in 1929 and was known as the Central Community Center. Boxing great Joe Louis trained here and so did Barry Gordy before he became the man behind Motown. We're also told Diana Ross, who used to live nearby, came here often. It was later renamed after Detroit's first black recreation workers. Mayor Duggan hopes that rich history is embraced for years to come.

The mayor says he's already gotten a lot of good ideas about what to do with the 51,000 square foot facility but they need to be in proposal form.

Developers have until September 22 to submit them. If a plan is approved the Brewster Wheeler Recreation Center will be taken of the city's demolition list.
