Sand collapses, kills 9-year-old girl

LINCOLN CITY, Ore. -- A day at the beach turned tragic when crews say a 9-year-old  girl got caught in a hole in the sand on Friday.

Officials say she was visiting from out of town with her family.

According to officials, the girl was playing on the beach, not far from the water, when crews say a hole collapsed and pinned her under as much as 5 feet of sand. They think she was in a hole, a few yards wide, when it somehow gave way and buried her.

Family and other beach goers tried to dig her out with their hands and shovel anything to get her free. Someone also called 911 when police and firefighters showed up, they starting digging also.

Together, they freed the girl after about 5 minutes beneath the sand.

At the time, she was unconscious and not breathing. She was taken to the hospital in serious condition, but unfortunately did not make it.

"The sand kept burying her. It was just sad. We bury our kids all the time and we don't think that a tragedy can happen, but it can, said a witness.

Officials are warning that a trip to the beach can become dangerous when sand gives way, especially during tourist season her when more people out on the beach.
