McBride family: Wafer 'had no remorse - it was all fake' at sentencing

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -  Theodore Wafer read through tears an apology to the loved ones of 19-year-old Renisha McBride, who he admitted fatally shooting on his front porch last November.

"I can only hope and pray that somehow you can forgive me,"  Wafer, 55, said. "My only wish that I could take this horrible tragedy back. I ask the court, your honor, for mercy."

But the family of Renisha McBride says that sentence is satisfying and they don't feel Wafer is sorry at all.

"Justice was served and they gave him the time he deserved," her father Walter Simmons said. "He had no remorse, it all was fake."

"(His tears were) for the judge," said McBride's aunt Bernita Spinks. "It wasn't for us."

Judge Dana Hathaway, agreed with the prosecution on  Wednesday sentencing Ted Wafer to 15-30 years in prison,  with an additional two years for felony firearm.

Hathaway, at moments was also fighting tears.

"A common theme from the letters from your friends and family, Mr. Wafer was bad choices," she said. "Although the evidence clearly showed in this case that Ms. McBride made some terrible choices that night. None of that justified taking her life."

Before that decision, Wafer's attorney  Cheryl Carpenter begged Hathaway to sentence Wafer under manslaughter guidelines adding that Wafer can be rehabilitated, that he won't be safe in prison.

She said that it was self-defense and  that he is remorseful.

Hathaway  also heard from Simmons and McBride's sister, Jasmine. Both asked for the maximum sentence.

"Losing my sister was one of the most devastating times of my life," Jasmine McBride said. "Many days I sit and think about the good times we shared and how they were cut short by one person's cowardly actions."
